Ottawa Senators (2.55) at Toronto Maple Leafs (1.61); Total 5.5

The season openers for both the Leafs and the Senators kind of went the way many people expected. The Leafs were expected to be better defensively with the help of a full season from Reimer and goal and they did look better in their first game of the season. The Leafs blanked the Canadiens 2-0 on Thursday night behind a strong 32 save shutout performance from goaltender James Reimer. Perhaps the biggest question this season was if Reimer could thrive as a #1 goalie for an entire season. While it is only one game, starting out with a shutout vs. the Habs most certainly is a great start. As for the Leafs offence they started out slow vs. Montreal and looked awful in the first period. But as the game went on they got it together and took it to the Habs for large parts of the 2nd and 3rd periods. Again the Leafs will be without MacCarthur (suspension), Connoly (injury) and Kadri (injury) for tonight's game.

As for the Senators not much was really expected of them coming into this season. They have a plethora of youth in the lineup and are definitely in re-build mode at the moment. Starting your season in Detroit is no easy choir but the Sens lived up to their season expectations and quickly fell behind 5-0 to the Red Wings. The Sens managed a few 3rd period goals to make the score look respectable but the final score was not indicative of the play on the ice. As expected it looks like it is going to be a long season for the Senators.

Selection:

The Leafs started off hot last season winning their first 4 games including a 5-1 win over the Senators. Even with the injuries I still like the Leafs in this game. Reimer has got to be confident coming off a shutout in the season opener. Plus Reimer had some great numbers vs. the Senators last season going 2-0-1 with a 0.98 GAA. The Senators will be hard pressed to get many by Reimer tonight. It is only early in the season but regardless it is back-to-back road games for the Senators while the Leafs have been sitting at home waiting for them. The line for this game has the Leafs as a 1.61 favorite. I am never going to bet any team as a 1.61 (or-165) favorite. Instead I'll take the Leafs to win in regulation time (-0.5 puck) for 1.98 (or -102) at 5 Dimes Online Sportsbook.

How does NHL regulation time betting work?

NHL regulation time betting is also known as NHL point spread betting or NHL 3 way betting. For regulation time NHL betting the point spread is always half a puck (or half a goal). You can either take half a puck which is shown as +0.5 or you can lay half a puck which is shown as  -0.5. If you lay half a puck (-0.5) as your bet your team must be winning by 1 goal or more at the end of regulation time (at the end of the third period). If the game is tied or the other team is winning at the end of the third period you lose this wager. If you take take half a puck (+0.5) as your bet your team must be winning or tied at the end of the third period for you to win the bet. The favorite in the game will always be -0.5 puck and the underdog will always be +0.5 puck. This is a 2 outcome (50/50) type of bet. You can choose either -0.5 or +0.5. Not all sportsbooks offer NHL regulation time betting. Not only does 5 Dimes Online Sportsbook offer regulation time NHL betting they also let you parlay NHL regulation time bets.
